1995 MAWG PRESIDENT, OFFICERS NAMED -- Jerry Nordick, Rothsay, was named president of the Minnesota Association of Wheat Growers at the group's recent convention. He replaces Warren Affeldt, Fosston, who steps down as MAWG president and from the MAWG board of directors after serving eight years.

Tim Dufault, Crookston, was named first vice president; Pete Kappes, Ada, second vice president; and Ron Anderson, Hallock, secretary/treasurer.

Earl Riopelle, Argyle, was elected and Nordick re-elected to serve on the MAWG board of directors. Others who serve on the MAWG board are Lyle Christianson, Halstad; Warren Maus, Maynard; Jerry Kruger, Warren; and Donna Ulseth, Crookston.

NEW TAX LAW AFFECTS DUES DEDUCTIONS -- A new federal tax law includes a provision that the portion of dues to an association which involves lobbying will no longer be deductible. As a result of the new law, 73 percent of your dues paid to the MAWG (rather than 100 percent) will be deductible.

MINNESOTA WHEAT COUNCIL ELECTIONS MARCH 21, 1995 -- Minnesota Commodity Council elections will be held March 21, 1995, with most polls open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at county extension offices and special polling locations in the state.

Three seats on the Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council (MWRPC) are up for election.

In Area 1, there are two seats: one currently held by Don Loeslie, Warren; and the other by Bruce Hamnes, Stephen. Counties in Area 1 include Kittson, Roseau, Lake of the Woods, Marshall, Pennington, Red Lake, Polk, and Clearwater.

The other expired seat on the MWRPC is in Area 2, currently held by Paul Aasness, Wendell.

Counties in Area 2 include Norman, Mahnomen, Clay, Becker, Wilkin, Otter Tail, Wadena, Morrison, Todd, Douglas, Grant, and Traverse.

All wheat producers in Minnesota are eligible to vote in the Council elections, conducted by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA).

For more information, contact the MWRPC at 1-800-242-6118, or the market promotion division of the MDA, 1-800-967-AGRI.

NOTES ABOUT THE NEW FEDERAL CROP INSURANCE -- You'll need to sign up for at least basic coverage, catastrophic or CAT, to be in the farm program. You can't have both CAT and a regular MPCI policy on the same crop. CAT, which insures 60 percent of price for losses exceeding 50 percent of yield, is available at Farm Service Agency offices and through private insurers. CAT coverage is based on actual production history. Buy-up or additional coverage is available only through private insurers. Additional coverage offers optional units, but they are not available under CAT. Sign-up deadline is March 15.
