* The U.S. exported a total of about 1.225 billion bushels of wheat in the 1993-94 marketing year (June-May).

* For U.S. spring wheat, the top 10 buyers in 1993-94 were the Philippines, Japan, Tawain, Venezuela, Nigeria, Korea, Ghana, Thailand, Bangladesh, and South Africa, in that order.

* Japan has historically purchased three classes of U.S. wheat: hard red spring, hard red winter and soft white wheat. Japan is strictly a cash customer and has been one of the top four buyers of U.S. wheat in each of the last 10 years.

* Egypt maintained its position as the second largest customer for U.S. wheat and was the third largest wheat buyer in the world in 1993-94.

* China followed Egypt as the third largest buyer of U.S. wheat even though China's large wheat crop decreased its import needs to a 20-year low. China will continue to be a major market influencer, much like Russia was in the past.

* The Philippines and Pakistan are two of the fastest growing wheat markets in the world. The Pakistan wheat market has grown by 55 percent in the last four years and total wheat imports by the Philippines increased 35 percent over the same period.

* Nigeria's return to prominence as a wheat importer, following a six-year ban on wheat imports, was a welcome sight as was the 100 percent market share the U.S. enjoyed.

* Taiwan, like Japan, is a cash customer for U.S. wheat.

* Uzbekistan was the highest ranking (11) U.S. wheat importer of the countries that were formerly the Soviet Union. Russia, ranked 3rd in 1992-93, ranked 21 in 1993-94. Much of the fall is due to a lack of hard currencies, as well as higher livestock input prices and higher retail meat prices that came with the end of communism. Russia's animal feed requirements and grain needs have fallen over the past four years in line with a decline in livestock numbers, according to the International Wheat Council, London.
