| BEST CROP THAT EVER WAS HAPPENED NEXT YEAR -- Such as the case this past growing season. All we can do is kick 1994 aside and cling to optimism going into 1995, hoping that short world wheat supplies will continue to bolster prices and that ol' Ma Nature will be more cooperative next year.
Scab will continue to be a major focus for the MAWG and the Minnesota Wheat Council this winter, however. The MAWG will bring the scab problem back to the next legislative session, and the Council will continue to address the issue via research.
A regional scab research conference and forum will be held Nov. 2-3 in Fargo, N.D. There, scab research results and management strategies from across the region will be discussed. A synopsis of the proceedings will be disseminated to growers from the Minnesota Wheat office.
SPOON KNOCKERS PAY DOUBLE -- There's a neat little cafe with a small-town feel to it called Dee's Kitchen, near the grain elevator in Thief River Falls, Minn. Behind the lunch counter is a sign that says: "Coffee Prices: One cup and refill -- 55 cents. One hour -- 70 cents. Half the morning -- $1.00. All morning --$1.50. All day -- $3.00. ($2.50 allows one hour to go home for lunch) Ask about our weekly rates. Spoon knockers, whistlers, cup wavers, thumb snappers, lid flappers, and ice rattlers all pay double."
MALTHUSIANS NEEDED AS GRAIN TRADERS -- Every once in awhile you'll see a news blurb quoting the Worldwatch Institute, a quirky environmental think tank based in Washington, D.C. Worldwatch periodically issues the dire prediction that massive food shortages will develop over the next 40 years as a zooming world population outstrips global food supplies. Remember British economist Thomas Malthus? He predicted as much a couple hundred years ago.
We need to get our Malthusianistic friends at Worldwatch on staff at USDA, or train them as grain traders. When they get wheat prices cranked consistently over $5 a bushel, we can begin to ponder their notion about an acute need in world grains demand a bit more seriously.
A "MOOVING" COMPARISON OF GOVERNMENTS -- We do a lot of groaning about the government, probably loudest around tax time and elections. Many times the boos and hisses are deserved. Still, although our country has its problems and our government may not be the perfect system, it's the best man has come up with so far. That's illustrated by an unknown author of the following simple comparison of different forms of government:
In SOCIALISM, if you have two cows the government gives one to your neighbor and lets you keep one.
In COMMUNISM, if you have two cows the government takes both and declares everyone an owner.
In ANARCHISM, the two cows run free and no one is really sure who owns them.
In FASCISM, you keep both cows--the government takes the milk and sells it back to you.
In NAZISM, the government takes you along with the cows and all are never heard from again.
In CAPITALISM, you build a herd by selling one of the cows and buying a bull.
