WestBred • 2009 Variety Trials

The WestBred brand business is pleased to publish our preliminary2009 HRSW performance trial results. As were the previous two years, 2009 was a great HRSW year, (plenty of moisture and no excessive heat) with low incidence of scab, some leaf rust, foliar disease, and bacterial blight. Along with the big yields came lower proteins (lower than expected in some areas), and some lodging. For your convenience, height and lodging data has been included in this year’s tables. The data clearly shows there are many good HRSW products, public and private, for farmers of the region to choose from. WestBred products, as a group, performed very well in 2009. Semi-dwarf Samson, a management variety, achieved record yields in our trials and farmer’s fields. All purpose, standard height varieties, Breaker and Blade, also yielded well, especially in environments outside the Red River Valley, and continued to show resistance to bacterial blight. Our best standing variety, Vantage, achieved very good yields with outstanding protein and test weight. The WestBred brand business is also pleased to include data on our new releases Brogan, WB-Digger and Edge in the performance trial results.

Brogan has been among the yield leaders in WestBred product trials for the last three years. It has typically been shorter (4-6 inches) and demonstrated better standability when compared to Briggs, a South Dakota State University release. With the exception of bacterial blight susceptibility, the characteristics of Brogan have been similar to Briggs.

WB-Digger is a good standing, medium height, medium protein, stay-green, management wheat. WB-Digger appears to have higher yield potential than Samson in environments where the extra height and stay-green is an advantage and should be considered a complementary product on the farm with Samson.

Edge is a good standing, medium height, high yield potential, medium protein management wheat with fast drydown making it an ideal candidate for straight combining. In performance trials, Edge performed well despite some concerns regarding the quality of the seed for planting. Edge will be marketed exclusively by Sabre Initiatives LLC.The WestBred brand business appreciates your business in the past and looks forward to the opportunity to earn your business in the future.
