USDA accepts five million acres into CRP

Bids were announced earlier this month from among those involving a total of 7.1 million acres that were offered in this sign-up. Average environmental benefits for the 18th signup were the highest rankings in the program’s history. This enrollment will bring total acres in the Conservation Reserve Program to 31.3 million acres on October 1, 1999. There are 29.8 million acres currently enrolled in the CRP, with about 3.5 million acres under contract expiring this September.

Reserving this land will not have a significant effect on commodity prices, farm income, or the United States’ ability to supply world markets with agricultural products, the USDA noted. Another general CRP sign-up is likely next fall. USDA also has a continuous CRP signup option for land dedicated to special conservation practices yielding high environmental benefits. Producers may submit offers under the continuous sign-up option throughout the year at local NRCS offices. Additional CRP information can be obtained from the FSA CRP information page on the web: www.fsa.usda.gov/dafp/cepd/crpinfo.htm.
