![]() The Small Grains Institute will be held jointly with the Red River Valley Potato Expo Feb. 9 and 10 at the Fargodome in Fargo, ND. The Potato and Small Grains Expo is the only farm show in the region with exhibits and information that focus on small grains and potatoes in rotation with other northern crops. Well over 100 exhibits featuring crop services, products, and equipment are expected, along with free samples of foods made from potatoes and small grains. Show hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Parking is $2, but there is no charge for admission. Use the east entrance of the Fargodome. The full program schedule is included on page 22. A few highlights: Farm Alarm: Coping With Stress Partners For Farm Health And Safety and the educational theatrical group "Theatre At Work" will present a play at the Potato and Small Grains Expo on Feb. 9 at 1:30 pm in the Fargodome. This presentation will help farm families identify key causes of stress, and resources available to help cope with stress to improve the health and safety of farm families. Research shows that farmers are often involved in incidents that result in injury due to many contributing factors such as the weather, economic conditions, fatigue, and mental errors. However, even under normal conditions stress is an issue and farmers can purposely create a safe, hazard-reduced work environment. "Partners" is a project of the University of Minnesota Extension Service Farm Safety and Health Program, and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Program goals are to 1) increase the active development of coping strategies among farmers and 2) decrease the incidence of illness or injury that is work-related or stress-induced. The project in the Red River Valley is coordinated by Carolyn Weber, an undergraduate of the U of M Crookston in the Ag Industries Sales and Management Program and Ruth Rasmussen, a nurse and program coordinator for Clearwater County Extension. More information on the project can by found on the projects web site: www.bae.umn.edu/fs/partners. "Cowboy Logic Live" Ryan Taylor calls the live version of
his column, published regularly in Agweek and other
publications, "a mix of rural humor and
old-fashioned motivation; the lighter side of going
broke, raising cattle and living on the prairie." It
brings anyone with a connection to farming or an
affection for the rural lifestyle, true stories that warm
the heart and make you say, "Yup, thats right.
Ive been there myself!" Cowboy Logic Live is both entertaining and motivational, with Taylors Will Rogers-style rope spinning and sage philosophy to chew on the return trip home. Although the overriding theme of the program is to have fun and laugh, the ropes are twirled and the tales are spun to emphasize the importance of teamwork, ambition and perseverance to farmers and ranchers, and the businesses and communities they support. Taylor will perform his "Cowboy Logic Live" at the Potato and Small Grains Expo, 1:30 p.m., Feb. 10, at the Fargodome. Thanks, 1998 ND-MN Wheat and Barley Convention Sponsor
