News & Views Under construction: A go-to profit center for MN producers
By Bruce Hamnes, Chairman Minnesota Wheat Council Stephen, MN Setting the
stage for better things to happen is a key purpose of the programs and activities of the Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council. For example, wheat production research projects, studies of wheat market trends
and new or different wheat uses, and promotion of U.S. wheat utilization here and abroad are all examples of leveraging wheat checkoff dollars to be proactive, and create better profit opportunities for wheat. That's
the point of Minnesota Marketplace as well. This winter, Minnesota producers are going to be hearing much more about this concept, developed in part by the efforts of the MWRPC. Basically, Minnesota
Marketplace will be a clearinghouse of sorts to put producers in contact with the buyers of what they produce. For example, say you want to grow organic wheat. But who will buy it from you, and at what
price? Or let's say an end user from Michigan or Japan is willing to pay a handsome premium for something you can produce on your farm. How could you learn about this opportunity? Minnesota Marketplace is being
established to answer those very questions. It will be an organization to identify and create opportunities for producers to receive a higher value for what they produce by meeting the needs of buyers and
processors. It is being established as a for-profit cooperative. There will be informational meetings to further explain Minnesota Marketplace at several locations throughout the state later this winter. If
you are a Minnesota producer, put this idea on your radar screen, because it is an exciting opportunity. The MWRPC is proud to be associated with the creation of this endeavor from the ground up, and looks forward to
promoting it, and your participation in it, to help ensure the success of this opportunity. |
