Reeder Most Planted in Montana in ‘06

Reeder became the most planted hard red spring wheat variety in Montana this year, rising to first with 768,500 acres seeded, compared with 685,900 acres in 2005, according to the Montana Agricultural Statistics Service. Reeder accounted for 26.5% of the total acres seeded.

McNeal dropped to second after eight consecutive years at the top, accounting for 21.7% of the HRS acreage in Montana, or 628,000 acres, which is down 125,500 acres from 2005. Choteau accounted for 17.3% of Montana’s spring wheat acres, and Conan 7.2%.

Rampart was the most popular winter wheat variety, followed by CDC Falcon, Neeley, and Morgan.  Mountrail, Kyle, Lebsock, and Alzada were the most planted durum varieties.  Harrington, AC Metcalfe, B Merit, and Tradition were the most planted malting barley varieties in Montana. Haybet and Westford were the leading forage varieties, and Bowman and Valier the most planted feed varieties.

The following spring wheat data on dryland fallow and irrigated trials is from Joyce Eckhoff, agronomist, MSU Sidney. Find more varietal performance data from the Montana State University Eastern Ag Research Center in Sidney, including barley and durum, online at www.sidney.ars.usda.gov/state.
