Comparing Varieties: Look at 3-Year Average, Consistent Performers

AgriPro spring wheat breeder Joe Smith believes that it is important for growers to look at variety performance over multiple years and locations. Since most data is available as three-year averages, he advises growers to find varieties that are consistent performers.

“The difference in the growing seasons between 2005 and 2006 was tremendous,” Smith says, noting the scab and foliar disease issues of 2005 and the lack of disease and dry conditions of 2006. “Looking only at 2006 data might not be the best way to pick varieties that work under environments with different challenges.” He added that 2006 was a complex testing year and research plots were difficult to interpret, given the abnormally dry conditions.

In the following table, Smith compares the three-year performance of leading private and public spring wheat varieties by economic return, using the 10-year average premium for wheat protein at Minneapolis and a Sept. local cash grain price of $4.23 for 14% protein. Factors that have influenced this information include the overall lower protein of 2003-04 and the leaf disease and scab pressure in 2005.

Sites in this study include Valley City, Argusville, Park River, and Maddock in N.D, and Breckenridge and Crookston in Minn. Individual location data of these sites, including S.D. and western N.D. sites is available online at www.agriprowheat.com.
