Preliminary North Dakota Barley Variety Trial Results for 2005 and 2006 Selection Guide

Compiled by Joel K. Ransom, Extension Agronomist

Barley varieties are tested each year at multiple sites throughout North Dakota. Variety performance data are used to provide variety recommendations to producers.  Some varieties may not be included in the tables because of insufficient testing, lack of seed availability or they offer no yield or disease advantage over similar varieties. Final results from the 2005 season will be published in the NDSU Extension Circular A1049. This circular and additional data from county sites will be available at www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/aginfo/variety/index.htm and from each Research and Extension center where small grain research is conducted. Descriptions of the most commonly grown varieties in the region are included for informational purposes.  To decrease the potential of making errors when choosing a variety, use data combined from multiple locations and years.

Information is based on research conducted by the following experiment station scientists, plant breeders, cereal scientists, and plant pathologists: R Horsley, Barley Breeder; J Franckowiak, Barley Breeder; S Neate, Plant Pathology; P Schwarz, Cereal Science; B Schatz, S Zwinger, Carrington; M Halvorson, Minot; N Riveland, Williston; P. Carr, Dickinson; E Eriksmoen, Hettinger; B Hanson, Langdon; Tim Friesen, USDA .

Robust Remains Top ND Barley Variety in ‘05
Robust remained the top barley variety in North Dakota for 2005, though it was seeded on the fewest acres in two decades, according to the North Dakota Ag Statistics Service. Robust accounted for about 37% of the 1.25 million acres planted in the state this year, continuing a downward trend from a high of over 80% in 2001. The 1983 Minnesota release has been North Dakota’s leading variety 20 of the last 21 years.

Lacey was the second most popular variety this year, reclaiming the spot from Legacy which dropped to third. Conlon remained the fourth most popular variety. Tradition was fifth, up from seventh last year. Drummond rounds out the top six; these six malt barley varieties accounted for about 86% of this year’s barley acres in North Dakota.

Haybet was the top feed variety and ranked seventh overall. AC Metcalfe remained in eighth place. The American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) does not currently recommend this malting variety in North Dakota, although it has this distinction in other states. Bowman and Westford completed the top ten in order.

These varietal rankings are based on a survey of N.D. growers by the N.D. Ag Statistics Service, funded in part by AMBA and the North Dakota Barley Council.
