Leading Grain Varieties in Montana

McNeal was the leading spring wheat variety seeded in Montana for the eighth consecutive year, accounting for nearly 29% of the state’s spring wheat acreage this year, according to the Montana Ag Statistics Service. Reeder accounted for 23.6% of the total spring wheat acres seeded in the state this year, followed by Ernest (11.5%), and Conan (8%).

Rampart remained the most popular winter wheat variety, followed by Neeley, Tiber, and Morgan. These four varieties accounted for about half of the winter wheat acreage seeded in Montana for harvest in 2005.

Mountrail remained the top durum wheat variety in Montana for the second year in a row, comprising about half of the state’s durum wheat acreage. Kyle accounted for about 21% of the state’s total durum acres, followed by AC Avonlea (5.4%) and Lebsock (5.2%).

The top barley variety seeded in Montana was Harrington (28.3%) for the twelfth consecutive year.  It is a two-rowed malting barley variety developed by the University of Saskatchewan. That was followed by AC Metcalfe (8.7%) and B 1202 (5%). Haybet remained the most popular forage barley for the sixth year in a row, accounting for 17.2% of the total barley acres seeded in Montana for 2005. Haybet, as the name implies, is used primarily for hay. Baronesse, developed in Germany, was the most popular feed barley again in 2005, representing 3.7% of the total barley acreage.

The following spring wheat data on dryland fallow is from Joyce Eckhoff, agronomist, MSU Sidney.  Find more varietal performance data from the Montana State University Eastern Ag Research Center in Sidney, including barley and durum, online at www.sidney.ars.usda.gov/state .
