Leading Grain Varieties in Montana
McNeal was the leading spring wheat variety seeded for the seventh consecutive year, accounting for nearly 32% of
the spring wheat acreage in Montana, or about 903,900 acres. That’s followed by Reeder, Ernest, and Conan. These four varieties accounted for just over 70% of Montana’s spring wheat acreage in 2004.
Rampart was the leading winter wheat variety, with 516,100 acres seeded this year, compared to last year’s acreage of 463,400. Neeley, Tiber, and Morgan
accounted for just over 60% of Montana’s winter wheat acreage seeded for harvest in 2004.
Mountrail displaced Kyle this year to become the top durum wheat variety in the state, on about 41% of the durum wheat acreage. These two varieties, along with AC Avonlea and Ward accounted
for 85% of the total durum wheat acreage in the state for 2004.
Harrington remained the top malting barley variety planted in the state for the eleventh year in a row, seeded on about 40% of Montana’s barley acreage.
The rest of the top four (all two-row varieties) were AC Metcalfe, Merit, B 1202.
Haybet remained the most popular forage barley for the fifth year in a row, followed by Westford. Baronesse was the most popular feed barley again in 2004, followed by Gallatin.
