Bread Book Helps Raise Awareness of Folic Acid Importance
New research has shown that folic acid, found in enriched grain foods, can help prevent some birth defects. Preliminary research also shows folic acid helps protect against some forms of cancer and heart
disease. Additionally, folic acid is one of the B vitamins the body needs to produce red blood cells, norepinephrine, and serotonin (chemical components of the nervous system). It also plays a critical role in
spinal fluid, helps synthesize DNA, and normalizes brain function.
To increase awareness of the health benefits of folic acid, the Wheat Foods Council and American Bakers Association have created a booklet entitled, Bread: Memories and Traditions of a Lifetime. Fifty
percent of the proceeds from booklet sales benefit organizations dedicated to raising awareness about preventing birth defects.
The booklet is a collection of stories, recipes, and drawings illustrating the importance of enriched bread in day-to-day life. To obtain a copy, send your name and mailing address, along with a check or
money order for $5.00 (includes postage and handling) payable to ABA Memories and Traditions. Mail check and request information to: ABA Memories and Traditions/VK 2405 Grand Blvd., Suite 700, Kansas City, MO 64108.
