NDSU Winter Wheat Seeding Rate Trial Results
Results from a winter wheat seeding rate study coordinated by NDSU agronomist Bryan Hanson at Langdon in 2006 indicated that HRWW should be seeded at a rate between 0.75 and 1.0
million pure live seed per acre. Differences in seeding rate in bu/ac will vary depending on seed size. Complete details on the 2006 trial at Langdon can be found online at www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/langdon - click on the ‘crop production’ link. The trial is being repeated again this year.
A similar trial on the effect of seeding rate on yield and agronomic performance of Jerry and Wesley hard red winter wheat varieties was conducted at Prosper, coordinated by Joel Ransom,
NDSU Extension cereals agronomist.
Seeding rates varied from 0.75 to 1.5 million viable seeds per acre.
The trial was planted following barley, and winter survival was good for all treatments. In fact there was no difference in winter survival between Jerry and Wesley. Jerry is one of the most winter hardy while Wesley tends to be only moderately hardy.
Yield was not significantly affected by seeding rate, though yields tended to be greater when more than 0.75 million seeds were planted for the variety Jerry.
Jerry was higher yielding, taller and produced greater seed size than Wesley. Lodging increased in both varieties as seeding rates increased above 0.75 million seeds per acre. Test weights were reduced slightly with higher seeding rates only in the variety Wesley. Ransom says these data support the current seeding rate recommendation of about 900,000 viable seed per acre.
