We asked Northern Plains soybean dealers to send us summaries of some of their most popular varieties. With early order and early payment discounts, and to guarantee variety available, talk to your seed dealer now. Below are a few dealer favorites to get you started. For those looking to diversify from Roundup Ready varieties, CROPLAN GENETICS® has LT1098, a LibertyLink® variety with very good iron deficiency chlorosis tolerance. It’s a tall variety with excellent standability, resistance to brown stem rot and the gene Rps1k for phytophthora root rot resistance. The relative maturity is 1.0. Another popular variety from CROPLAN GENETICS® is RT0043, which has excellent iron deficiency chlorosis tolerance. It has a relative maturity of 00.4, and contains the Rps1k gene plus sclerotinia white mold resistance.

LS 0087RR from Legend Seeds is a .08 relative maturity, high yielding variety that will work in narrow or wide row widths. This variety has exceptional tolerance to white mold and a great defensive package. LS 0087RR has excellent emergence for early planting. Legend recommends Trilex 6000 on all early planted soybeans. Another popular variety is LS 0624RR RM 0.6 This variety brings excellent high end yield and should be positioned on high performance soils. LS 0624RR will tend to have great late season podding. Works well on medium high Ph soils and is recommended for both no till and reduce tillage operation.

Pioneer® 90Y20 is a 02 maturity soybean with excellent yield potential. 90Y20 is a medium-tall variety with above average iron chlorosis tolerance. 90Y20 has the 1k gene for phytophthora root rot and has above average field tolerance to phytophthora root rot.

Pioneer® 90Y41 is a 04 maturity soybean with excellent yield potential and resistance to soybean cyst nematode (SCN). 90Y41 has shorter plant height, above average tolerance to iron chlorosis, the 1k gene for phytophthora root rot, and has above average field tolerance to phytophthora root rot.

Peterson Farms Seed has Peterson 0901, a 0.1 maturity. It has been nicknamed “the bean machine” as it has several long lateral branches that resemble mainstems! With excellent iron chlorosis resistance, this variety yields exceptionally well. Growers say this bean has great harvestability; often commenting that it is their “favorite bean to combine.” Another popular variety is Peterson 0905, a 0.5 maturity that will raise the bar for yield and iron deficiency chlorosis resistance in this maturity. It handles stress very well, has excellent iron chlorosis resistance and very good field tolerance to phytophthora.

A little homework prior to buying seed can help you achieve the best performance from your fields. Use the variety tables in this issue of Prairie Grains to aid in your decision.
