Wheat CAP Helps Identify Disease Resistance and Quality Traits

Dr. Jim Anderson, Minnesota Wheat Breeder is part of the Wheat CAP program and he uses Marker Assisted Selection. Below is list of traits that have markers associated with them and the list has been ranked in order of importance. Jim Anderson’s breeding program has used all of them to some extent, but the overwhelming amount of his marker effort is dedicated to scab.  The Wheat CAP is also working to develop new markers for scab, preharvest sprouting resistance, more leaf rust resistance genes, stem rust resistance (targeting the new Ug99 race), and mixing/baking properties.

  • Fusarium head blight (scab), 2 genes
  • Leaf rust, several genes
  • Dough mixing/baking properties, 3 genes
  • Grain protein
  • Height, 2 genes
  • Tan spot
  • Grain hardness

Dr. Mohamed Mergoum, North Dakota spring wheat breeder uses the CAP project mainly to generate information on markers related to the following traits:

  • Fusarium head blight (scab)
  • Grain protein Content
  • Leaf spotting diseases, mainly tan spot
  • Hessian fly (starting this year)
