Extending the information and results generated by the U of M researchers working on spring wheat and barley continues to be instrumental in helping producers manage FHB. The On-Farm Yield Trials are an opportunity for producers to see the new scab resistant varieties, like the U of M’s newest releases ‘Tom’ and ‘Sabin,’ first hand during summer plot tours, giving them a better handle on how these new varieties fit into their production system.

Likewise, increasing pressures of SCN and corn rootworm in southern MN continue to spark interest in spring wheat. In cooperation with local and regional extension educators, a series of five meetings was just completed in the southern half of the state that focused on sound agronomic practices to allow not only for spring wheat to be produced profitably but also to avoid potential disasters with FHB and the associated grain quality discounts due to presence of DON.

The evolution of the SmallGrains.org website continues as a fourth redesign and migration to a database-driven engine was rolled out in the fall of 2007. To improve ease-of-use and navigation, keys were developed to guide users of the website to applicable and relevant resources in the production library. With the help of a few simple questions, users are now guided to subsets of the available resources in each of the subject areas in the production library. The time and effort that went into the overhaul of the SmallGrains website paid off as the website was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in the American Society of Agronomy’s A-4 Division’s Extension Educational
