Forum Highlights Research Advancements
Wheat R&D—Research and Development—was a key theme at the Wheat Industry Conference held recently in New Orleans. Presenters at the Wheat Industry Research Forum, coordinated by the NAWG and the
Wheat Industry Resource Committee, briefed Wheat Industry Conference attendees on a wide array of wheat-related research topics. Among them:
• Idaho wheat producer Duane Grant, the NAWG’s research chair, and other wheat industry experts discussed the value of remote sensing—using satellite imagery to detect crop stresses and needs.
• How wheat producers may eventually be compensated for carbon sequestration.
• Phil Kenkel, University of Tennessee, outlined results of a study on the costs of wheat segregation strategies in a “post-Starlink World.”
• South Dakota wheat producer William Ferguson discussed an effort to match wheat sellers and buyers online at www.americrop.com.
• North Dakota State University plant pathologist Len Francl reviewed a wheat disease forecasting system available online at www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/cropdisease/.
• Rick Siemer and Carl Schwinke of Illinois-based Siemer Milling discussed a premium schedule established five years ago to reward producers for supplying wheat with certain qualities.
Over 50 research projects from wheat plant development to marketing are outlined in a published proceedings booklet of the 4th Annual National Wheat Industry Research Forum. It may be obtained through the
NAWG office, ph. 202-547-7800. Both the National Wheat Industry Research Forum and its proceedings are sponsored in part by the North Dakota Wheat Commission, South Dakota Wheat Commission, and the Minnesota Wheat
Research and Promotion Council.
