Minnesota commodity council elections will be held March 19, 1996, with most polls open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at county extension offices and special polling locations in the state, consisting mostly of grain elevators and farm input suppliers. All wheat and barley producers in Minnesota are eligible to vote.

On the Minnesota Barley Council, Mike Seeger is running unopposed for re-election in district 1, and Leroy Backman is running unopposed for re-election in district 3.

Three seats on the Minnesota Wheat Council are up for election, each with a term of three years. In Area 1, Dwight W. Peterson of Warren will be challenging first-term incumbent Ellsworth Danielson of Fosston. Counties in Area 1 are Kittson, Roseau, Lake of the Woods, Marshall, Pennington, Red Lake, Polk, and Clearwater.

In Area 2, Chuck Krabbenhoft of Sabin, and John Leiseth, also of Sabin, are challenging two-term incumbent Cliff Keller, Fergus Falls. Counties in Area 2 include Norman, Mahnomen, Clay, Becker, Wilkin, Otter Tail, Wadena, Morrison, Todd, Douglas, Grant, and Traverse.

Running unopposed in Area 3 is Francis "Butch" Buschette, Renville. Buschette is a former MWC board member, and will be running for a fourth term. Area 3 includes the counties of Big Stone, Stevens, Pope, Stearns, and all counties south of those. Bob Starr steps down from the Minnesota Wheat Council after serving Area 3 since 1981.
