St. Patrick’s Day is around the corner, and it’s usually celebrated with beer, colored a little green. When Minnesota farmers invest a little "green" for membership in the Minnesota Barley Growers Association, it’s been proven that the membership investment can result in more green, many times over.

For example, U.S. barley producers have received an estimated $286 million more in deficiency payments over the course of the 1990 Farm Bill. That’s because your financial support helped the MBGA to be there when the bill’s language adopted deficiency payments on the preferred price of feed barley. It was a major task for us to convince Congress to exclude the price of malting barley in the determination.

We successfully lobbied to have the 5 percent malting barley assessment eliminated. We were successful in urging the MN Legislature to invest more green into solving the scab problem in barley. The MBGA is making sure barley is treated fairly in the 1995 Farm Bill, and once it’s finalized, we’ll be there to make sure the policy is administered fairly to barley growers.

Invest a little green into becoming a member of the MBGA, if you’re not already a member. Because the MBGA prefers to spend less "green" on membership mailings and accounting, and more on what you want us to be doing —lobbying for barley—we ask that you consider first a 3-year membership in the MBGA, for $125. We are pleased to announce that Ciba-Geigy, Dupont, and Monsanto are assisting us in our membership program; become a 3-year member and receive your choice of either $100 worth of Tilt fungicide; a 3.5 oz. sample of Harmony Extra; or 100 pounds of Far-Go granules. Become a three-year MBGA and you’ll also receive a barley jacket ($45 value) and a cap.

Or, become a one-year MBGA member for $50, and receive an MBGA cap and your choice of Tilt or Harmony Extra.

We hope you are pleased by the accomplishments of the Minnesota Barley Growers Association, and will support us. For more information, call Lorri Ann at the MBGA, 1-800-242-6118.
