- Efforts of SDWI, MAWG, and the NDGGA helped to get the pilot Crop Revenue Coverage (CRC) program approved for South Dakota, Minnesota, and 23 ND counties in 1997; and for MN, SD, and all of ND in 1998.
- MAWG secured $1.6 million in the state legislature for continued scab funding over the 1998-99 biennium.
- Congressional testimony: the MAWG testified in Washington D.C. on federal research reauthorization; the NDGGA testified in Washington on Canadian grain imports. The NAWG testified on many issues from CRP to crop research.
- NDGGA and MAWG helped to facilitate the registration of a Section 18 for the use of Folicur for pre-harvest scab suppression in wheat and barley.
- MAWG and the Minnesota Barley Growers Association secured $100,000 over 1998-99 for a Minnesota spring wheat breeder.
- NDGGA organized and sponsored an Environmental Tour to provide a hands-on educational agriculture experience for Congressional and federal regulatory staff.
- SD Wheat Inc. lobbied for SDSU Ag College and Northern Crops Institute funding; legislation that gave a tax refund on construction of value-added processing plants worth at least $4.5 million; and opposed legislation that would have removed certain tax exemptions for farmers, in the state legislature.
- NDGGA lobbied and testified for the following bills during the 1997 Legislative Session: NDSU Experiment and Extension budget; wheat and barley checkoff increases; minor use pesticide; anhydrous transfer; ag products defamation; farm vehicle licensing
- The MAWG, NDGGA, SD Wheat Inc. and NAWG lobbied on rail transportation problems and an increase in rail demurrage tariffs following harvest.
- The NAWG achieved improvement in Administration proposals concerning rental rates and enrollment criteria for 15th CRP sign-up, and sought additional modifications to criteria for 16th sign-up relative to combined erosion factors and air quality.
- The NAWG helped establish two multi-commodity organizations for agriculture research- PARG, CROPS.
- NDGGA hosted the 1st Annual Wheat & Barley day in Carrington to promote the state's wheat and barley industry.
- The MAWG hosted a Pro Farmer Super Strategies Seminar and internet workshops.
- The NAWG helped influence a federal tax bill that includes income averaging, a clarification in the alternative minimum tax, and farmer-friendly capital gains and estate tax changes.
- The NDGGA, MAWG, and SD Wheat Inc. lobbied on late and prevented planting measures, nonstandard classification changes, adjustment factors, and other changes related to federal crop insurance.
- The MAWG and NDGGA hosted USDA Undersecretary for Research, Education and Economics Miley Gonzalez in the Red River Valley so that he may get a better understanding of the impact that scab is having on our region.
- The NAWG stopped an effort to transfer $60 million EEP to strategic government owned grain reserves.
- The MAWG, NDGGA, and SD Wheat Inc. played a key role in the successful formation of the United Spring Wheat Processors. Board Members met with board members of USWP to discuss future plans of the company.
- The NAWG engaged with groups seeking more rapid bio-technology development (genomics) and appropriate regulation of GMO's internationally and domestically (labeling, plant pesticides).
- The NDGGA co-hosted a tour of the Prairie Pothole Region to educate Vic Cole, Chief Regulator of the Corp of Engineers on agricultural problems associated with wetlands.
- The NAWG sought and received written assurance from Administration that STE's, price transparency, and S/PS issues would be priority negotiating items in trade negotiations as condition of NAWG support of "fast track".
- The NAWG built a coalition and led efforts to deal with under-utilization of export programs (GSM credits, PL-480, EEP) to expand sales and protect funding baseline.
- The MAWG played a key role in obtaining $1 million in FY98 federal scab funding.
- The NAWG helped secure an increase in foreign market development funding through the Foreign Ag Service.
- The NDGGA played a key role in keeping the Mandan Ag Research Station open.
- SD Wheat, the MAWG, NDGGA, NAWG, and other segments of the wheat industry met throughout the year to implement a long-range plan for profitability of all sectors of the wheat industry going into the 21st Century.
