The 2nd annual Cereal Bowl last month in Brookings, SD featured more than a pigskin clash between South Dakota State University and North Dakota State University. At half-time, South Dakota farm commodity groups were recognized on the field for their contributions to agricultural research at SDSU. Total research dollars received by the university from the production sector this year should exceed $1 million.

The SDSU Cereal Bowl is sponsored by the SD Wheat Commission, SD Corn Utilization Council, SD Soybean Research and Promotion Council, SD Oilseeds Council, SD Crop Improvement Association and Quaker Oats.

In addition, there is a raffle (two pedal tractors this year) and pancake breakfast that helps fund scholarships at the SDSU plant science and athletic departments.

"The pancakes, made from wheat flour enriched with soybean and oatmeal, fried on griddles greased with corn, soy and sunflower oil and with corn sweetener in the syrup, represent the entire grain industry," says Fred Cholick, associate dean director of the SDSU ag experiment station. "SDSU has always appreciated the partnership between the university and the grain industry, but the contributions were hard to make exciting without symbols." The Cereal Bowl, however, appears to be well on its way to establishing itself as an annual symbol of recognizing the public-private ag research partnership at SDSU.n
