The fourth annual Minnesota Association of Wheat Growers Golf Tournament will be held Monday, July 8, at the 18-hole Moorhead Country Club, located just west of the American Crystal Sugar Plant.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m., with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. Don't worry about coming without a partner: we'll find you a good match. The format this year is four-man scramble (best ball) on 18 holes, with low handicap and low scratch (no handicap) play.

Prizes will be given to first, second, and third-place teams for low handicap and low scratch scores. There will be special contests on designated holes during the course of tourney play, including longest drive, closest to the pin, and longest putt. Many door prizes will also be given away to those present at the 6 p.m. barbecue, also at the Moorhead Country Club.

There will be six hole-in-one contests (the most yet for a MAWG tourney) on designated holes during the course of tourney play. Here's what an ace could win:

Tri-Axle Grain Truck with Box and Hoist

A $40,000 value, sponsored by Wallwork Truck & Trailer Center, Fargo; and Bert's Truck Equipment, of Moorhead.

Cost is $40 per person which includes: green fees, cart, morning rolls and coffee, box lunch, and steak BBQ. Cost to attend only the evening barbecue is $15 per person. The course opens at 7:30 a.m.; rounds beyond the 18 holes of tourney play are $5 per player for nine extra holes; $10 for 18 extra holes, payable at the course. A driving range is available.

Back by popular demand: the mulligan, which can be purchased at registration for $20 per team or $5 per person, and may be applied to any stroke during tourney play, except hole-in-one drives and other contests on the course.

The newly-renovated Red River Inn (formerly The Madison Hotel) off I-94 in Moorhead, is offering a special $39 rate to those participating in the MAWG golf tourney. For reservations, call 1-800-328-6173 or 218-233-6171. You must mention the MAWG Golf Tourney to receive the special rate.

The MAWG golf tourney would not be possible without the sponsorship of wheat-supporting businesses in the region. Sponsors of this year's tourney will be recognized in the next Prairie Grains.

Lyle Christianson, who serves on the MAWG board and is chair of this year's tourney, says the purpose of the event is to promote fellowship among wheat growers and members of the business community, as well as raise funds for MAWG programs.

"But having fun is the main objective, and whether or not you're an experienced golfer doesn't matter. The tourney is open to members and non-members of the MAWG, as well as growers who are involved or interested in the North Dakota Grain Growers Association," says Christianson.

In fact, Christianson has issued a challenge to the NDGGA: A foursome of MAWG leaders will take on a foursome of NDGGA leaders, all to be announced, with the losing state paying $100 to the winning state's wheat PAC fund.
